“Everything Everywhere All at Once” — Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu; directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert
From Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — the filmmaking auteur duo who go by the sobriquet Daniels — comes a kung fu flick that transports audiences into a metaphysical action-fantasy extravaganza. At the center of the story is Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh), a married middle-aged woman who lives with her tender-hearted husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) and their grown daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu). Unfortunately, Evelyn is beset with a chaotic life, and her misfortunes run the gamut from her struggling laundromat business to her mounting tax debt.Minutes later, Waymond and Evelyn are about to meet with an IRS agent (Jamie Lee Curtis). Somehow, suddenly, Waymond entirely shifts gears and informs Evelyn that the fate of an intricate multiverse rests in her hands. Meanwhile, in the blink of an eye, Evelyn is propelled into a dizzying world where she jumps from one universe to the next, acquiring special skills and springing to action to stop an “agent of chaos.” Will Evelyn prevail? See it. Yeoh dazzles with her wide-ranging acting abilities and magnificent martial arts skills. Although this mind-bending movie could feel somewhat overlong, the Daniels have delivered an amazing film nevertheless. Well, the anthropomorphic blue hedgehog with the ability to run at supersonic speed is back for another action adventure. Picking up nearly one year after the events of the original film, the sequel finds Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) living a blissful life on Earth with the Wachowski couple, Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter). Meanwhile, Sonic’s nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (voiced by Jim Carrey) — who is currently banished to the “mushroom planet” — is exacting his revenge against our hero. Moments later, Robotnik crosses paths with Knuckles the Echidna (voiced by Idris Elba), who ultimately helps the robotic scientist escape. Together, the two newfound friends make their way to Earth to find Sonic. Luckily, Sonic’s sidekick Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey), a double-tailed fox with the ability to fly, sensed a looming danger ahead of Robotnik and Knuckle’s imminent arrival. Will Sonic and Tails be able to escape Robotnik’s wrath? We’ll also learn as to why Knuckle is in hot pursuit of Sonic.See it. The film delivers enough fun and excitement for the whole family to enjoy — though, at times, the screenplay can feel rather vapid and bland. Watch the trailer.
