Youth In Newport Beach To Have Access To COVID-19 Vaccine

(Shutterstock)NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Are you waiting to get your child vaccinated against COVID-19? The Orange County Health Agency hears you. Within the next few days, a COVID-19 vaccination for children ages 5-11 will be offered through the OC Health Care Agency, the agency reported Wednesday. This move comes after the COVID-19 vaccine for children was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Tuesday. Following those approvals, the safe use of the vaccine was affirmed by the Western States Safety Review Workgroup and the California Department of Public Health Wednesday. The OC Health Care Agency is currently finalizing preparations to offer the Comirnaty (Pfizer) COVID-19 vaccine to youth ages 5-11 throughout the county. Find out what’s happening in Newport Beach-Corona Del Marwith free, real-time updates from Patch.Let’s go!“We expect the vaccine to be available at our mobile clinics within the next few days and through other regular vaccine distribution channels as well,” County Health Officer and HCA Director Dr. Clayton Chau said in a press release. “We ask for our community’s patience as we and other providers prepare to make the vaccine available to the newly eligible age group.” According to the FDA, clinical trials showed the vaccine to be safe with no serious side effects detected in children and a 90.7 percent effective rate in preventing COVID-19 in this age group. Parents and guardians looking for a vaccine for eligible children are encouraged by the OC Health Care Agency to check with their pediatrician for availability.

However, the child’s vaccine is a lower dose (10 micrograms) than is used for people 12 years and older (30 micrograms). Depending on the timing of the vaccine, a child will be given the appropriate dosage according to their age at the due time for each dose.
